Frans van Steijn Academic Consultancy



Frans van Steijn Academic Consultancy (FvS AC) was started by Frans van Steijn after his retirement in September 2014. Since 1996 he worked at the Association of the Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) as policy advisor in research policy, and quality assurance and as secretary to the VSNU Board and Rectors Conference. FvS AC is specialized in academic quality assurance and research policy.

Evaluations of academic research are generally based on peer review by international experts and bibliometric data on the evaluated research.

Frans van Steijn offers experienced and professional support for research evalutions. In general, these are carried out and published in English.

Frans van Steijn supports research institutes, faculty and university boards and research assessment committees.

Frans van Steijn may act as secretary to visiting committees in agreement with the Dutch and Flemisch quality assurance protocols within the regulations of the Netherlands-Flemisch Accreditation Organization NVAO.

About Frans van Steijn



Dr. F.A.J. (Frans) van Steijn (1949, Amsterdam) graduated in physics (BA) and philosophy (MA) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and University of Amsterdam. He received a PhD for his thesis “The Universities in Society; a Study of part-time professors in the Netherlands”(1990).

As teacher and researcher in the unit Science and Technology Dynamics of the University of Amsterdam he did research and advisory work in the fields of science policy and research management. His teaching activites involved courses in 'Science and Society' for science students.

From 1996 to his retirement in 2014 Frans was a staff member at the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU), engaged in research policy and quality assurance of academic research and education. In 2003 he also acted as secretary to the VSNU Board and secretary to the (independent) Rectors Conference. In 2012/13 he was project manager of the national working group responsible for the 'Standard Evaluation Protocol 2015-2021' for the research assessments in the Netherlands.

From 2012 to 2016 Frans was member of the supervisory board for the study programme assessments (VLUHR) in the Flemish universities and universities of applied sciences. In August 2014 Frans van Steijn retired from VSNU. As independent advisor he offers his knowledge and expertise to universities.


